Need to read Word & Excel files on your Mac? Or still using Office 2004 or 2008? It’s time for an upgrade. And Microsoft isn’t the only game in town.
Office 2016 for Mac brings the features of Office for Windows and reads & writes the same files. But it’s designed with the Mac in mind and looks right at home. It also includes the cloud functions. So now you can access your docs on Mac, Windows, iPad or Surface, and work in a version of Word, Excel or PowerPoint designed especially for that device. It even allows simultaneous editing by several collaborators in a document at the same time.
Office is usually sold by subscription. When you purchase an Office 365 Personal subscription for $7 a month or $70 a year you get Word, Excel and PowerPoint for one computer and one tablet. Or choose an Office 365 Home subscription for $10 a month or $100 a year, and install on up to to 5 Macs or Windows PCs and 5 iPads or Windows tablets. Office 365 Business is $8.25 a month for 1 Mac or PC, plus 1 tablet (includes admin tools). Business Premium is the same as Business and adds email hosting.
Or check out alternatives to Office. Three apps – Pages, Number & Keynote – are free with every new Mac. These apps take better advantage of Apple technologies like iCloud and have matching web, iPad & iPhone versions. They open and export Office, PDF and other common formats. Just be aware that some documents may reflow or change appearance during conversion, so certain working environments still call for Microsoft Office.
