You can run thousands of apps on your Mac. Most popular Windows programs are also made for Mac… and every Mac can run Windows if necessary.
But a Mac is not a PC, and Apple’s distinctive clean design goes beyond hardware. Apple has attracted a following of loyal users, to be sure… and loyal developers that program exclusively for the Mac and iOS platform.
Think about it: most of the big-name programs began in the 1980s. A lot has changed in the computer world, and in some ways they haven’t kept up. In contrast, many modern apps showcase Apple innovations such as the Retina Display, Auto Save, Versions and trackpad gestures before Microsoft & Adobe. Many have iPad equivalents – with iCloud support you simply close a document on your Mac and immediately continue it on another Mac, iPad or iPhone. No transfer or conversion required. And most apps import and export files in standard formats.
Many apps made for Mac are sold in the Mac App Store. Download and installation are just a click with no serial numbers to track. As a little incentive to try something new, these apps are priced much less than big-name software. And Mac App Store rules allow you to install them on all the Macs and devices you use at no extra charge.
