Google iPhone & iPad setup

With a Google email account, messages sync across all computers and devices you use. Delete a message on one device and it’s deleted everywhere. You may also sync contacts, calendars and notes with Google.

Setting up Google services

  1. From the home screen, tap Settings. Then tap Passwords & Accounts.
  2. If there is already an account set up, edit settings by tapping it and go to step 4. This is also where you can remove an account.
  3. To add an account, tap Add Account. Choose Google from the list. Enter the information requested, matching what you use to log into Gmail’s web page.
  4. Check the options you need. Mail syncs with Gmail; other services may be better with iCloud. Check Contacts only if you need to sync names with the Gmail web site or an Android device. Calendar sync is great if your workgroup uses Google Calendar. See more information below.
  5. Tap Account to change the description. For example, if you have two Google accounts, you might label one Personal and another Work. Or delete an account you no longer need.
  6. Tap Delete to remove an account.

Which options do you need to turn on? You don’t have to enable everything. For example, you might not enable Google contacts if you’re already syncing them through iCloud. But if you have a personal account and a company account, you might turn on Mail and Calendars in each account. The Mail app will then show both inboxes, and Calendar app both calendar systems. Even so, your home mail & calendars will be stored in your personal account, and your employer has no access to them on their system. That’s the beauty of the Apple apps: they can show information from multiple sources, while storing them separately and securely.

Having trouble? Your account and passwords on the device and the account’s web page must match. If you change the Google account password on the web, the easiest way to change it on the device is to remove the account and add it again. Your data will be downloaded again.

Need to sync other Google calendars?

By default, only your main Google Calendar shows in the device’s Calendar app. Here’s how to show other calendars.

Your account and passwords on the device and the account's web page must match. If you reset your account password on the web, you must change settings in Mail, Contacts & Calendars.

Having trouble with email? Try removing and adding your account. All your messages are preserved.

You might also want to install and configure Google Drive.

Setting the default calendar

  1. From the home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap Calendars.
  3. Tap Default Calendar.
  4. Select your main Google calendar or another calendar.
