Installing Mac software

We recommend purchasing software from the Mac App Store. Not only do you eliminate discs, driving and shipping delays, installation is completely automatic and you can install apps on all compatible devices you use at no additional charge. No serial numbers to track, no extra license fees.

Some software isn’t available in the App Store. Click for instructions for Microsoft, Adobe and Amazon purchases.

For other downloads, follow the steps below. We’ll use Google Drive as an example.

Installing from a disk image download

  1. Open the Safari browser and go to the web page with the software you need.
  2. Find the software you need and click download for the Mac version.
  3. Click the Downloads icon in Safari and double-click the software. Skip to step 6.
  4. Or click the Downloads folder in the dock. Can’t find it? Click the Finder (desktop), then click the Go menu and choose Downloads.
  5. Open the disk image for the app you’ve downloaded.
  6. Drag an app icon to the Applications folder. Or if the icon looks like a box, double-click it and you’ll be guided through the installation process.
  7. Click Launchpad and open the app, or drag it to the dock for easy access in the future.
